I got the seeding done just before the heavy rains that we had a few weeks ago, hoping it would help the seed set, but not wash it away. We seeded everywhere, but seeded the eroded gullies heavily with this hope.
We headed out March 12 to check out the progress of the new grass and clovers.
It looks green....
... but as we get closer, we realize it is not what we planted. Weeds don't bother me, but I'd rather the cover crop we chose serve their purpose.
Our grass is growing, but we can only see it when we look very closely. This is baby ryegrass...

and this is where I loaded the spreader and spilled seed! The round leaves are the clover.
As we reached the lower areas near the creek, we find not only has some seed washed away,
...we saw some evidence of pretty high water. When we first visited this creek in November we saw some of this, but thought it was from the epic floods that happened last May. Maybe this is a regular thing? This flooding area is nowhere near where we will build, by the way, but it will be animal pastures and exploration/camping/play areas around the creek.
Debris piled against trees
Tall grass laying down.
Water has been really rushing through here- I wish I could have seen it.
The gullies were washed clean of seed, but it left a nice canvas for deer tracks (looking at the glass half full)
Avery had left, not one, but 2 coats out here while exploring. We found one...
Our creek makes an arc around our lower fields, and when the creek is extrememly high, it flows over and through this field. We can see that happened recently...
So it is a little too early to tell how the seed is doing. I don't think I spread it heavily enough, but there is hope that as it grows it will crowd out the weeds...... hope, hope, hope. Next year, we will seed in the fall for an earlier start for these cover crops.

It's good to find out now where the water is flowing.
Yes. Fortunately, the area we are planning to build in is nowhere near this area- building area is much higher. This low area is actually in a flood plain.
