Since I am blogging from a tablet, I am not able to arrange pics within the text. I hope you will be able to figure out which pics go with which explanations, but if its not clear, of course feel free to ask. Unfortunately, I also don't know how to rotate pics within the blog. They look fine in my picture gallery, but in the blog- sideways. So, I apologize for making you twist your neck. Hopefully when I get to a regular computer, I can fix it, but in the meantime, I'll not take any more vertical pics!
Exciting Week Last Week:
After four and a half weeks of living on the land in our camper without electricity or a mechanical water supply, which was amazing by the way- I hope to update with those pics later- building has begun! Our neighbor, Mr. Morgan came over with his bulldozer and dug into our hill to level the site for us a couple of weeks ago, then Daddy did some more work on it with "Johnny," the tractor Daddy's parents bought and are graciously sharing with us.
As of Thursday, we have electricity via 2 huge power poles. That process was very interesting to watch- most interesting was how many vehicles they had to accomplish this. There were no less than 8 trucks here at one point. Although I am very happy that I can now use a reading light at night without having to run a generator to charge up batteries, I am pretty proud of the fact that we have only turned on the air conditioning in the camper 2 times since then! I think we have acclimated somewhat to the 90+ degree temps. When we ride in the truck with really good AC, it is always harder to get back out in the heat. So I figure if we keep the air on, we won't ever come out of the camper. I try to get my farm-y work done early in the morning when its cool. Two trips a day to the creek to rinse off always helps, too :) I kind of see it as a challenge. People have lived in this kind of heat throughout history and still do! If they can do it, we can too.
David Hunley, his son and nephews arrived on Tuesday, set up camp with us and got to work digging footers, leveling the site and building forms. David built Mimi and Pa's house at the lake and became a family friend in the process. I love his enthusiasm and energetic nature. He gets things done quickly, does it right, and makes friends in the process. I took him to our little Lascassas Feed and Supply that opened recently by a family in our little community, and ordered our lumber and some other supplies through them. We also went into Murfreesboro to get plumbing and electrical supplies. The employee at the plumbing supply store was very interested in what kind of drains we were putting together with HDPE pipe. When he heard is was for a greywater system, he explained to us about his 10k gallons of rainwater cisterns under his backyard. We had a nice convo about green building issues and it turns out the city won't let him put up a wind turbine on his house! Humph! Got some good resources and I was glad to have an ally when David rolls his eyes when I talk about the environmental impact of PVC.
The kids are having so much fun with the "big boys!" They acted very bored this weekend after the boys went home since they had been playing frizbee, football, wrestling, and general goofing around all week with the boys. You know there will be great cheering when their white truck pulls down the driveway tomorrow!
